Pennsylvania Mom Wins Ultimate Golf Giveaway for Family
Loren Rueberger of Hermitage, PA, doesn’t play golf, but her family loves it and last spring they attended a golf show in Cleveland as a family foursome.
“I hate to say this, I thought it might be you know, a scam, but I signed up because it sounded like something everybody in the family would like,” she said. “We take golf trips. We’ve been to Canada, Florida, North Carolina, but never to Michigan for golf. I thought, why not?” Why not?
Loren’s entry was drawn as the 2020 winner. The Rueberger family will receive four nights lodging, six rounds of golf, two breakfasts and two dinners each in the Mecca, which features 20 golf courses and 20 partner lodging facilities, including world-class resorts and championship golf designed by some of America’s top golf course designers.
“The family is excited, especially our son (Aiden) who’s 12,” she said. “His father (Lee) is really good at golf and plays three or four times a week in the summer. Our daughter (Paisley) – she’s 8 – is really just getting started at it and has joined the First Tee (national junior golf program). “I never thought Aiden would be into sports. He’s a very smart kid, he’s into books, but once he found golf, he is outside practicing all the time. He’s obsessed with it. I’ve had neighbors ask me ‘why are you making your kids swing golf clubs outside all the time?’ I’m not making him. He just likes to do it. He would live at the golf course if I let him.”
Aiden has been part of a championship-winning PGA Junior League team the last two years at Tam O’Shanter of Pennsylvania Golf Course in Hermitage and Loren said he is excited to play the Mecca courses.
“Hopefully this summer we will make it happen,” she said.
The Mecca’s resorts and courses regularly receive accolades from national publications like Golf Digest, Golf Magazine and Golf for Women. A recent Golf Digest poll ranked Gaylord and Northern Michigan as the 12th best golf destination in the world and 8th best in the United States. Golftime Midwest readers voted the Mecca the No. 1 Best Golf Destination in the Midwest in 2019, too.
