Fore Reasons to Make Otsego Resort Part of Your Mecca Golf Plans

By Greg Johnson –

Otsego Resort has been part of the Gaylord golf story for a long time, and there are plenty of reasons it remains a favorite stop in the Gaylord Golf Mecca. Two very different golf courses, on-site lodging, beautiful Northern Michigan scenery and a great place to gather after the round all add up to a golf getaway that has a little bit of everything. We could give you four dozen reasons, but let’s start with four.

#1 – The Tribute

The Tribute is one of the top golf courses among the 16 member courses of the Gaylord Golf Mecca. It has everything a golfer looks for in a destination course, including challenge, beauty, multiple tees, elevation changes and incredible views. It is a modern layout with classic design concepts and takes golfers through 1,100 acres of the picturesque Sturgeon River Valley. The views from various points on the course are amazing, including many of 25 miles or more. The golf design by PGA Tour player Gary Koch and Rick Robbins is exceptional, with large undulating greens and yardage ranging from 5,085 to 7,347. It’s all a golfer could ever desire.

#2 – The Classic

The Classic has a different golf experience. Still offering tremendous views, it is friendly for families, seniors, juniors and everyone in between.  Designed by William H. Diddel of Indiana, a charter member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects who designed over 75 golf courses in his career, The Classic measures a maximum of 6,348 yards and plays with less elevation changes. Pro Shop Manager Cam Laug, who is in his seventh season working at the resort, said a tip of the cap goes to Superintendent Jeff Nabozny because this year The Classic is in the best condition that he has witnessed.

#3 – Stay Where You Play

Otsego Resort has 80 guestrooms on site in lodges with an Alpine log-cabin feel and timeless comfort. The resort actually started the area’s Alpine theme that carries into downtown Gaylord. The rooms are offered at comfortable price points and are comfortably decorated and appointed, too. Groups will love the Hilltop Lodge and its aptly named Great Room. It’s great for gatherings and celebrations around a large fireplace. It sets a high bar for golf groups, no question.

#4 – Finishing the Day at the Duck Blind Grille

The Duck Blind Grille, located in the main lodge, has a 27-mile view of the Sturgeon River Valley, but so much more. It’s a perfect dinner and after-golf gathering place with great food and a friendly bar area. A wonderful wide-array of food items are part of the menu, and the comfort and coziness of the resort is also part of the grille’s appeal. According to the friendly staff, diners rave about the Salmon, while the pasta and barbecue ribs are popular choices, too.

Four reasons are plenty to get started, but once you experience the golf, the views, the lodging and the hospitality at Otsego Resort, you’ll probably come up with a few more of your own. It’s easy to see why Otsego Resort has been an important part of the Gaylord Golf Mecca for so many years.
