MUST STOP: Five Reasons to Make Black Lake Golf Club Part of Your Mecca Trip
By Greg Johnson –
Black Lake Golf Club in Onaway, one of the 16 premier golf courses in the Gaylord Golf Mecca, ranks among the best golf courses in Michigan year after year and is simply a must-stop. It offers the best of everything. We could tell you everything, but let’s start with a fabulous five reasons to make it part of your next trip to the Mecca.
#1
Black Lake features the award-winning golf course that architect Rees Jones designed for the UAW Black Lake Conference Center in 2000. It’s a classic design with imaginative bunkering, top-notch conditioning, and a get-away-from-it-all feel on each isolated hole. You really can get away from it all and play without seeing another group even on busy days.
#2
Magnificent trees and views on the rolling terrain surround you with green, beautiful nature, wonderful wildflowers, and wetland beauty. In the fall, the leaves of those magnificent trees put on a vibrant color show. It’s a great nature escape and a round of golf at the same time. Turn off that cell phone and concentrate on your game on a golf course built by the guy U.S. Open venues have trusted for years to get them tournament ready.

#3
Black Lake Golf Club will challenge and thrill all who play it. It has made more than one appearance on Golf Digest’s “100 Greatest Public Courses in America” list and has annually made best-of lists across the board. It was designed to provide a challenge for golfers of all skill levels. Five sets of tee markers give the golfer options, and the course plays from 5,058 to 7,030 yards. Maximize your enjoyment by picking the right yardage. It can be as tough as you like or as fun as you like.
#4
The Little Course at Black Lake was built along with the championship course by Jones and opened in 2000. It was popular before short courses became popular. It has nine holes, all par 3s, ranging from 50 yards to 120 yards. It’s a wonderful place to practice, settle lingering golf bets or just have fun with the entire family, even those not especially skilled at the game of golf. Take a few clubs and play it in 40 minutes or less. Short story: it is fun.

#5
Black Lake is central to one of the most popular travel packages in the Mecca. They make it easy to visit their grounds and a few other fabulous courses, too. It is called the Tour Golf Package, and it is presented in conjunction with Mecca partners Gaylord Golf Club and Michaywe’ Pines Course. It is loaded with multiple rounds of classic golf at amazing prices, and in September, fall rates will kick in. Black Lake usually stays open well into October.
Some golf courses are worth playing once. Black Lake Golf Club is the kind of course you’ll want to come back to again and again. That’s what makes it a must-stop in the Gaylord Golf Mecca.
