Black Lake Golf Club Earns Awards
By Greg Johnson
Black Lake Golf Club, one of 16 Gaylord Golf Mecca member courses in America’s favorite summer golf destination, has been winning awards since the popular Rees Jones design opened in 2000. They can add two more, as GolfPass included the Onaway destination gem on two of its annual honor lists: The Top 100 Golf Courses in America Under $100 and the Top 25 Public Golf Course Layouts – Golfers’ Choice 2024.
Black Lake, 18 miles off northbound I-75, features the classic course that Jones designed for the UAW Black Lake Conference Center. Imaginative design and bunkering, top rates at $80 and the staff providing elite conditioning in the Northern Michigan get-away-from-it-all setting make Black Lake a must-stop heading north. Golfers find themselves isolated on each unique hole just an hour drive from Gaylord and an hour drive from the Mackinac Bridge.
The course was designed to provide a challenge for golfers of all skill levels. Five sets of tee markers are part of most holes with the course playing from 5,058 to 7,030 yards. Complementing the big course is The Little Course, a nine-hole par 3 meant to introduce young people to the game as well as sharpen the short games of others. In addition, Black Lake also has a practice area with a 350-yard double-sided bentgrass tee range, four practice bunkers, four chipping/putting greens and a clubhouse with a dining room, lounge and locker rooms.
Visitors continue to visit via Black Lake’s exceedingly popular Tour Golf Package which is run in conjunction with Mecca partners Gaylord Golf Club and The Pines at Michaywe’. It’s loaded with multiple rounds of classic golf at amazing prices.
