25 YEARS AND COUNTING

Black Lake Golf Club Offers the Best of Everything

By Greg Johnson –

Black Lake Golf Club in Onaway, one of the 17 premier golf courses in the Gaylord Golf Mecca cooperative marketing group, has been offering the best of everything for 25 years. We could tell you everything (even 25 things), but let’s start with four fabulous reasons to make it part of your next trip to the Mecca.

1)
Black Lake features the award-winning golf course architect Rees Jones designed for the UAW Black Lake Conference Center in 2000. It’s a classic design with imaginative bunkering, top-notch conditioning and a get-away-from-it-all feel on each isolated hole. More than once, it has appeared on Golf Digest’s “100 Greatest Public Courses in America” list and has annually made best-of lists across the board. It was designed to provide a challenge for golfers of all skill levels. Five sets of tee markers give the golfer options, and the course plays from 5,058 to 7,030 yards.

2)
The environment is pure golf, pure Northern Michigan and pure isolation and enjoyment. Magnificent trees and views of the rolling terrain make everything appear green for miles. And in a few months, the views will showcase nature’s vibrant colors. It’s great golf in living color all season, and a fall color tour to boot. Getting away from it all comes with the territory at Black Lake.

3)
Black Lake is central to one of the most popular travel packages in the Mecca. Called the Tour Golf Package, it is presented in conjunction with Mecca partners Gaylord Golf Club and The Pines at Michaywe’.  It is loaded with multiple rounds of classic golf at amazing prices, and in September, fall rates will kick in. Black Lake usually stays open well into October.

4)
There is a growing trend in golf to add a par 3 course to destination properties. Black Lake Golf Club was 25 years ahead of that curve. The on-site crew with Jones’ company fashioned the nine holes of The Little Course with the same precise work they performed on the big course. It’s nine holes, easy to walk and great for settling after-round debts, sharpening your short game or enjoying family bonding time. The Little Course at Black Lake has been popular since 2000, and along with the championship course and a standout practice area, it all adds up to a world-class golf destination.

Here’s to 25 years and counting.
